How to choose luggage for your trip

It’s not always easy finding that perfect piece of luggage. You have a host of options and variations, all with great innovations, unique designs and loads of styles. So where do you start and what do you need to look out for when you need to choose luggage?

We have a range of tips and tricks to help you make the best, informed decision for your next trip.

Choose luggage that fits the journey

Softside or hardside? Strange question if you have never chosen luggage before. Essentially you need to factor in two things when choosing a hard case or soft case for your journey; weather and duration.

A weekend getaway leans itself towards a soft side because you can take more with you. A softsided suitcase is more flexible and allows you to squeeze more products into your suitcase.

A longer trip which includes a flight may be better suited towards hardside luggage. These sturdy cases are more rigid and will protect your fragile belongings better.

There are several locking/zipping options and a handy TSA lock will ensure pesky thieves will not access your belongings. The hard case also protects your bag from cuts to the exterior during long flights and the various movements along the way.

Weather will always be a consideration during travel, and that is no different with luggage. A hardcase in most instances are the clear winners here. A hard case is almost always water and windproof.

Size matters

There are size rules at every airport with every airline. When you choose luggage, you need to make sure you pick the right size according to the rules to avoid paying extra when you arrive at the airport. Look up the measurements of your suitcase and check them with the airline’s requirements.

Also, watch out for expandability rules. There are a few airlines which accept expandability as cabin luggage, but you should ask before you arrive.  Check out our handy guide to the various airline requirements to make sure you know what sizes are allowed.
